What do official documents say about generators in campgrounds?
Federal rules for every National Park System unit ban generators louder than 60 dBA measured at 50 feet. A battery station makes no engine noise, so it falls outside this limit.
Yosemite's 2026 rules allow campground generators only from 7–9 am, 12–2 pm and 5–7 pm, at most 6 hours a day and never overnight. A CPAP or a fridge running through the night needs a battery.
In national park backcountry, running any portable motor or engine, including a generator, is banned without a permit.
National parks recorded 2.5 million RV overnight stays and 3.1 million tent-camper overnights in 2025, out of 13 million overnight stays in total.
