What do official documents say about plug-in balcony solar?
Utah's 2025 law H.B. 340 defines plug-in solar as up to 1,200 W through a standard 120 V outlet, certified by UL or another approved lab, and exempts it from interconnection agreements.
H.B. 340 Solar Power Amendments (2025 General Session, Enrolled Copy)
The same Utah law bars utilities from charging fees for qualifying plug-in solar, but the device must shut off during an outage. Plug-in solar alone won't keep your lights on; a battery station will.
H.B. 340 Solar Power Amendments (2025 General Session, Enrolled Copy)
New Jersey's Garden State Balcony Solar Act, signed on September 1, 2026, exempts plug-in solar devices of up to 1,200 W from utility interconnection rules and stops landlords and HOAs from broadly banning them (per the governor's announcement).
