Best power stations for home backup
Which power station can grow largest for home backup?
The Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus leads this list on maximum capacity with extra batteries (30,000 Wh), among the 15 of 56 current models that meet every requirement. From another brand, the Anker SOLIX F3800 Plus comes next (26,880 Wh).
Why these requirements?
2,000 Wh and 2,400 W cover a fridge plus small loads for most of a day. Expandability is required because multi-day outages need more than one battery's worth; the list is sorted by how far each model can grow.

What do official documents say about US power outages?
The US Energy Information Administration's data shows the average US customer went 662.6 minutes (about 11 hours) without power in 2024, counting major events. Leaving out major-event days, it was 131.6 minutes.
Electric Power Annual, Table 11.1 Reliability Metrics of U.S. Distribution System (2014–2024)
EIA found that major events, led by Hurricanes Beryl, Helene and Milton, caused 80% of the hours Americans spent without power in 2024. Ordinary outages add up to about two hours a year, so backup sizing is really about the rare long outage.
Hurricanes in 2024 led to the most hours without power in the United States in 10 years
In EIA's 2020 household survey, 22.7 million of 123.5 million US households (about 18%) had an outage lasting more than 24 hours, 19 million of them caused by weather.
South Carolina customers averaged nearly 53 hours without power in 2024, the most of any state, mostly from Hurricane Helene. In a bad year, a two-day outage is the case to plan for, not a single evening.
